Mimbres Valley Authority / Enterprise CommunityLuna county was designated an Enterprise Community in January 1999. USDA Rural Development State Director Stephanie Gonzales presented a plaque to City and County Officials on February 12th at the Garcia Civic Center, officially designating Deming/Luna County an Enterprise Community. In making the presentation Gonzales said "This is an honor for me to make the presentation on behalf of President Clinton and Vice President Gore." She Added " The white house made the decision three weeks ago to make Deming and Luna County an Enterprise Community. This is real important because it will now be easier to attract businesses to the area which in turn will create new jobs." This designation will make Deming and Luna County eligible for special economic assistance from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. It is one of 20 new rural Enterprise Communities in the U.S.. The Enterprise Communities Initiative allows communities to implement their own economic development plan. In other words instead of the government telling the community what to do, the Deming/Luna County Enterprise Community will be charting its own economic future. The strategic plan submitted by Deming and Luna County states it will create partnerships between all levels of government, private business, community groups and local residents to bring new economic life to southwestern New Mexico. Enterprise Communities will receive special consideration for other federal assistance programs, including new tax-exempt facility bonds and tax incentives for employment programs. The federal grants and tax incentives will be used to attract new business and help existing businesses expand, create and retain jobs. The funding can also be used to provide affordable housing, reduce crime and clean up environmental pollution.![]() For more information, contact:
